angel of the battlefeild
That was what people called her. During the civil war she lived in Washington D.C. and she saw all the injured soldiers come in on a train. She saw the injured soldiers lying for days in the hot sun; almost none of them lived. She knew then that it was time to put her dreams into action. She was going to be the first woman ever to go to the front lines. She sent a letter to the president, (Abraham Lincoln ), asking permission to go to the front lines and nurse the soldiers back to health, then and there. After her work in the war, she was well known. She went around the country making speeches about her time in the war. Everyone was fascinated by the fact that this tiny woman had risked her live so many times and saved so many people. But what really shocked people, was that she didn't just helped the Union, but the confederate soldiers too.
THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS
One day she walked on stage to make her speech and nothing came out of her mouth. She went to the doctor and he told her she needed to go somewhere new and stop working for a few years. She went to a different country and saw their flag, then she asked her friend -who she was visiting- what it was. Her friend told her that it was the flag of the International red cross. That very night two men came to her friends house -were she was staying- and asked if they could see her. She went to the garden were the two men were standing, when she reached them they told her that they had heard all about the famous Clara Barton. After that the men explained about the International red cross and how their nurses could walk onto the battlefield and show the cross on their sleeves and soldiers would have to stop their fire for the nurses, so they could then help the soldiers. They also told her that they helped with natural disasters too. "Wow", Clara told them "that would have helped a whole lot in our war".The men then told her that America would not sign the International Red cross contract. the men asked her if she would be able to persuade the new president (Andrew Johnson ) if he would sign the contract. Clara replied "Its about high time i return home"
THE AMERICAN RED CROSS
Wen Clara got back to the states the president denied that they would ever need it because they don't have wars often ; then she told him that the International Red cross also helped with Natural disasters too. But he still would not sign the contract. She then had an idea . If she couldn't show president Andrew how amazing the International Red cross was why not show him in a different way she would make the American Red cross! That would would show him how useful the Red cross is! So she started it up, helped out in a flood; then the president agreed to sign! She had done it Clara Barton had kept her promise to the men!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
