INTERESTING DETAILS ABOUT MYSELF: Education, Family, Life Experiences
EARLY LIFE: My family and I moved from Pepin, Wisconsin to Indian Territory in Kansas. Then we went to Plum Creek and Walnut Grove, Minnesota, and also Burr Oak, Iowa before settling in De Smet, South Dakota.
EDUCATION: I had the equivalent of a high school diploma when I finished school. Actually, that was more education than most people achieved at that time. However, at the age of 15, I became a teacher after passing the teacher test.
FAMILY: I am the 2nd of five children; I have one older sister; two younger sisters; and one brother who died at age of 9 months.
LIFE EXPERIENCES: I moved around a lot, from one midwest town to the next.
I went to school with other kids at times, but most of the time, I taught myself.
This helped me to become a teacher at the age of 15.
On August 25, 1885, I married Almanzo Wilder at a church in South Dakota.
I then became an author at the age of 65;
HOW DID LAURA INGALLS WILDER BECOME AN AUTHOR? My daughter Rose inspired me to become a writer.
WHY? My daughter Rose wanted me to write about my pioneer days.
HOW MANY BOOKS DID I WRITE? I wrote 9 books in all, with the 1st one being, Little House in the Big Woods. All the books were based on the "Little House". The other stories were called:
Little House on the Prairie
On the Banks of Plum Creek
By the Shores of Silver Lake
The Long Winter
Little Town on the Prairie
These Happy Golden Years
The First Four Years and
The Main Series
WHAT INFLUENCES I HAVE / HAD ON OTHERS? I offered young readers a first glimpse of American life in the late 1800s. I was one of the first authors to show people that pioneer women were smart and talented people who gave as much to their families as men. I met every challenge with strength and courage.
